Search requests periodically fail with 400 error "Failed to derive xcontent"

Occasional search requests (/api/search/v2/query) will fail with a 400 error "Failed to derive xcontent". However, when the same request is run again it passes. If it is not possible to prevent the "Failed to derive xcontent" exception from occuring a 500 error should be thrown instead since this is not an issue with bad parameters.
