ArchiMate's current focus on IT-centric aspects of the world is limiting. Even with the addition of the business layer, key features are missing from the standard. Businesses operate within a broader context, using, designing, and consuming technology and infrastructure that is not IT-centric. A more holistic view of an enterprise, integrating internal and external behaviour, is not just important but essential for a comprehensive understanding of the architecture of an enterprise.
The physical and resource layers need the equivalent structural elements and behaviour we see in the business and application layers now. This should allow us to model the technology infrastructure of a bus or taxi service, a fuel delivery service, etc. The relationships between these layers and the business and technology layers are identical to those between the application and business layers currently.
